Quilombola housing

The design prioritizes the creation of spaces that make it possible for the family to carry out their daily activities, especially those related to agriculture. The rooms are organized in two volumes arranged to take advantage of natural resources, such as the wind and the sun, to ensure the best conditions for thermal and lighting comfort.

The composition of independent parts is structured along axes that enhance cross-ventilation, passively cooling the spaces. These give rise to the axes of access and circulation, which integrate the dwelling with the other activities taking place in the surroundings. It is combined with the positioning of the balconies on the façades with the most sunlight, north and west, which allows for greater shading of the rooms on hot days.

Complementing the shade generated by the verandas, the roof, in addition to performing its primary function of protection from the weather, expands beyond the limits of the walls, generating shaded spaces on the outside of the house. This allows for better use of peripheral areas and maintains the traditional uses of veranda spaces. In addition, its very steep slopes better identify the dwelling amid nature, contributing to the cultural acceptance of the proposed architecture.

In terms of zoning, the family’s privacy is also taken into account. The programs relating to common uses are housed in a volume separate from the private area. The volumes are connected by a large shaded and ventilated outdoor area that can be closed off by partitions if the family so desires, with the kitchen’s connection to the balcony and patio standing out, which facilitates activities related to agricultural cultivation and also promotes comfortable living.
